Water Serpents II

Represented in their beauty and nudity, women are often the subjects in Klimt’s artworks, depicting sensuality and eroticism. Water Serpents II displays four women lying together surrounded by water, symbol of fertility and birth. Their bodies are positioned in sinuous curves, intersecting their masses of hair with sea ornaments and flowery motifs. Often represented with flawless bodies and attractive features, the title given by the painter indicates that beauty could always hide lies and evil. Klimt succeeded in becoming one of the most important artists in Vienna during the Art Nouveau.
