Adele Bloch Bauer

Realized in 1907, the painter was asked a portrait of Adele by her husband Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. Coming from a wealthy and refined family, her persona was divided into half: fragile and vulnerable on one side, proud and self-conscious on the other. Indeed, she found her inspiration in the romantic literature which resembled her elegance yet fragility. Sit on a golden throne and surrounded by a golden starry sky, she appears in all her majesty. Her eyes are, however, rich in pain. The erotic symbolism of the painting, hint to a possible relation between the two, shows the deep attraction between Adele and the painter.
